Fring for iPhone

I tried the Fring pre beta for iPhone, it has the promise to become what pidgin is to me on the desktop, but, it's really buggy and lacks some really important features I wish they'd add before they release the beta or goto stable.

Crib 1: I can't tell if the other person is typing,

Crib 2: It forgets the chat history. When I exit fring it forgets all the history.

Crib 3: It dies off if left in the background. How am i supposed to browse and chat at the same time?

Crib 4: It does not do the horizontal view on iPhone. It's easier to type. and provides better readability, the phone is easier to hold that way, and most people browse in the horizontal view, doing both thing at once, I don't want to keep rotating the phone.

Crib 5: It does not hide off-line contacts, neither does it group the contacts.

Crib 6: I have to navigate through 3 screens to chat with multiple people. Surely they have heard of tabs, safari on iPhone allows tabs (of sorts), something similar should work.

Crib 7: Crashes whenever you try to make a call.

Update:
Crib 8: When I'm chatting with someone, I have to continue finding them in the whole list again and again. Keep current conversations sticky on top, or provide tabs.

It's a cool app, if only it'd do what I want.

Hello,

I've heard the term "Impatient Aspirers", used a lot, it means the 20 somethings who have a lot of income and practically no responsibilities. Well! I fall in the same category. Everyone keeps telling me how I spend too much, and of-late I've been thinking that maybe I do spend a lot of money needlessly. So, I undertook an assignment. To document all the money I spend.

Now my intention was to document it and analyze it to understand if I spend needlessly and if I could stop it, not that I want to save money or anything, but, to stop myself from giving someone money they don't deserve. I have a very different understanding of money, it goes like this, I work very hard for the money that I earn, so, it's only natural that I would like to give it to someone who works as hard as me. Selling a sweetened soda for 125 Rs is not hard work, it's called ripping people off. I'd not like to be ripped off.

When I did actually document my spendings of the first ten days of march, the sum surprised even me. The amount in question can easily provide food for 20 people for an entire month. I looked at the amount of money I spent in ten days and realized that I have a problem. I wanted to document this and publish it.

I want to reduce my spendings by 50% in the next week and 80% then next week. I will also document April and see if I did any better.

Now, before I do this; I want a question to be answered. When I talk about something like this, spending so much money, it is indeed disturbing but, at the same time implies (it could be understood as such) that I HAVE that kind of money to spend.

So the question is, should I make the real spendings and real data available to the public?

Radiohead In Rainbows Review

Ok I'm a little late to the party, but, I missed out the on-line release completely and today is the first time I heard of "In Rainbows" And, I got hold of it as quickly as I could. I guess all of you would've been stuffed in your beds for the past two months listening to it secretly.

As soon as I pressed play, A smile surfaced on my face, "15 step" has a very very Radiohead sound, the opener, creates an edgy, stark and minimalist sound that sets up the album. This gorgeous, guitar riff and Kid A-esque closure is followed by "Bodysnachers," a song building in complexity every second and you're wondering here is another OK Computer, they're finally going back to the terrifying, the rage that arises from everyday boredom that makes you want to scream.

You're wondering and comes out "Nude" with the same "Creep" or "Paranoid android" like controlled aggression. There is something special about the way anger is presented in the mellow sounds of "Nude." Thom Yorke's voice so ably carries it off as only he can do. You wonder where is this going? This is way too organic and laid out, way too organized a song for Radiohead to be playing.

Only to be followed by "Arpeggi," The song usese drums, base, electronica background, guitar and piano. It epitomize the fusion of all of Radioheads influences over the years to create an astonishing sound… The smile returns.

The lyrics on "All I need" are disappointing to say the least. The song is beautiful, though. What appears to be assortment of leftover sounds from a OK computer session is made into a love song of sorts, and as the songs nears end, an assortment of musical accoutrement, employing echoey bells, a fuzzy synth and Phil's crashing cymbals, a booming piano completes the raucous and jarring to almost noise.

"Jigsaw Falling Into Place" seems like it fell out of "Hail to the thief" when no one was looking. The song has a lot going for it, it builds at it progresses and has a constant beat to it. Easy to like for people who are not necessarily used to the Radiohead sound.

All in all the album that took four years to complete does cover the whole breath of the various antics that Radiohead has indulged in over the years. The album does not flow as well as "Hail to the theif," but, "Hail to the thief" was a much controlled album, this album seems like an earnest effort to look back and pick and choose from their 20 years of music creation.

The album has far less aggression and ends with a rather gloomy finale: Videotape. The musical song has very grim lyrics. In this haunting proposition a lingering piano progression is joined by background vocals of morbid howling along with military drum beat that, over time, morphs into a stuck videotape player.

My copy has a disc two with eight more songs, I leave them for another time.

In Rainbows is a much subtle record. It's almost like hearing a remix of old favorite songs. Though lyrically disappointing and it seems to lose its way in the middle with "Fraust Arp" and "Reckoner." The album succeeds in representing sheer uncomplicated beauty.

Electronic Music FAQ

Lot of people have asked me what is the difference between Electronic, Trance, House and Funk? I've tried to explain but without much data at hand, So, here I'll try to cover as much as I know.

To say that electronic music is music that uses electronic equipment to create music does not mean much today as all forms of music contain some electronic sounds. To understand this more, take a look at the various types of electronic music:

* Ambient
* Electro
* House
* Techno
* Trance

The above is not a comprehensive list, I'm not going to talk about Synth and Industrial as I've not heard much of either and don't have much to say about it either.

Ambient
Ambient music is a style that has a focus on various sounds with a respect to space rather than melody, the music might not follow rules or set patterns but is intentionally created to be used as background music and at the same time as music to listen to if the listener wishes to pay attention. It usually features slowly evolving sounds, repetition, and is relatively static.

In 1978, Brian Eno released Ambient 1: Music for Airports. It came out at the peak of disco, and was largely ignored when it was released.It was the beginning of ambient music. It has come to be regarded as a sort of masterpiece.

Eno wanted to make music that would support reflection and space to think. Eno did this by creating music that was beautiful, did not demand your attention. In his liner notes, Eno puts it this way: "Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting."

Ambient music influenced countless artists. Ambient music itself was influenced by french artist Pierre Schaeffer and would later be influenced by early albums by Pink Floyd.

Electro

In the mid 70s a German band created a sound that combines a driving rhythm section with catchy, synthesized melodies and harmony; song lyrics were sung through a vocoder or generated by computer speech software. The Kraftwerk sound was revolutionary for its time.

Kraftwerk was heavily influenced by Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix and other minimalist and R&B acts of the time, Replacing drums and guitars with synthesized pulses and programmed beats, Kraftwerk expertly diverted the Velvets' speed rush into the metronomic rhythm. They directly influenced Elecro as it came to be an electronic style of hip hop.

The Electro sound essentially is the use of drum machines as the base of a track and use syncopated rhythms. often experimenting and creating completely new electronic sounds.

House

House music took disco's use of a prominent bass drum on every beat and developed a new style by mixing in a heavy electronic synthesizer bassline, electronic drums, electronic effects, funk and pop samples, and reverb- or delay-enhanced vocals.

House came to existence in mid-1980s in the U.S. House music is essentially quick tempoed with a prominent 4/4 beat, with a kick drum on every beat, altered sounds and samples of recordings from jazz, blues or pop are added to the foundation of the drum beat and synth bass line. But, the beat almost never changes, which, in my opinion makes house extremely boring.

Techno

Techno like House is usually a regular 4/4 beat, sometimes faster, but rarely slower. A classic techno drum pattern features a kick drum sample on beats 1 and 3, a snare-like sound on beats 2 and 4 and a highhat on each upbeat; a kick drum is usually also present on alternate beats.

Techno and trance, which developed alongside house music, share this basic beat infrastructure, but they usually leave out house's live-music-influenced feel. Techno came into prominence in the States in the mid 80s. Techno roots in funk(James Brown) and soul music and at the same time is influenced by, Electro and House Techno. Techno were to leak into Europe, where it'd find it's true home. Moby and Laurent Garnier are few of the Techno DJs that I like.

To use techno to refer to the whole class of electronic music is blasphemy, Electronic music has many forms, one of which is techno.

Trance

Trance traces its genes to the Acid house movement, Acid house emphasizes a repetitive, hypnotic style, with spoken lines rather than sung lyrics. Acid house's characteristic electronic "squelch" sounds were developed with the Roland TB-303 electronic synthesizer-sequencer. Trans is usually a 4/4 signature with faster beat phases than House.

Characteristics of a true trans sound are kick drum on every downbeat and a regular open hi-hat off-beat and lengthy snare rolls. Sounds are created mainly via synthesizers, rapid arpeggios and minor scales are common. The song would use one central melody which runs through almost the entire song, the song would be heavily loaded with reverb and delay effects on the synthesizer sounds, there is no need for anything to sound anything like a "real" sound.

Progressive

The new cool is Progressive, you can even sell horseshit by calling it Prog shit, don't believe me? Try it. To understand Progressive House, Progressive Trans, Psytrance and Progressive Psytranse(can things get worse)we must take a look at the fountain, Prog Rock.

I'm going to get a lot of flame for this from many fanboys but, Pink Floyd did well to bring back almost dead Prog rock back. Don't believe me? listen to "A momentary lapse of a reason" and "Dark side of the moon." Neo-progressive as it was called would later influence a lot many.

Progressive rock leaves the blues inflections behind and denies rules of song structure by extending sections and experimenting between song sections and inserting instrumental sections devoted to instruments or sounds (ringing bells, telephone anything) never used in classic rock. The "progressiveness" of progressive music stems from the use of contrapuntal melodies, unusual or shifting time signatures, offbeat sound effects and a general tendency to create music as different as possible from mainstream pop.

Progressive Trance would not focus on the "central melody" but more on what you do with it. And in the case of progressive house, the term "progressive" can refer to bringing new sounds to House, sounds which are normally not used within the style.

Goa Trance and Psytrance

Goa Trance is a phenomenon without any clear goal if I were to be so rude. Goa trance has clear influences by Techno, but, It is a mixture of so many different things that it's hard to say. This maybe the reason of it's downfall.

Goa trance led to Psychedelic Trance, which, has a more distinct sound, PsyTrance is usually way faster than Techno and uses constant bass beats, overlaying the bass with varying rhythms, many different sounds are added and removed from the peice during the course of the song. A buildup will happen till a climax is reached, and then the song will break down and start a new rhythmic pattern over the constant bass line.

Tiger hills Sunrise

One of the most touristy places in my North East trip was Darjeeling, Darjeeling is totally avoidable, but,for one thing. The Sunrise on tiger hills. It's one of the most beautiful things I've witnessed. I captured it minute by minute for you :).

Tiger hill, Darjeeling offers one of the best views of the Kanchenjunga mountain range and on lucky days you can see Mt Everest too. I concentrated on the Sunrise. Best viewed in the slideshow.

Manas National Park

The best part of my year is December, when I take a break and visit north east, I did that last year and promised Assam that I will visit her again. There were doubts of me going, and when I decided to goto Manas, which is in the bodoland council territory, everyone warned me against it and I had some reservations of my own when I left Guwahati for a six hour drive towards Manas.

I stayed with the Manas Maozigendri Ecotourism Society, Camp just outside the park’s entrance of the Bhyuapara Range from the Kakla Bari area. and they made me feel right at home. Brilliant food and really simple, lovely, cheerful and warm people. During my stay there were no other visitors and it was obvious that very very few tourists come to Manas. My phone didn't work, There was electricity in short spells, No hot water and living in a wooden camp inside the forest made for a very quite and peaceful time. This is one of the most remote jungle areas of the country. It's about 8 KM from the Bhutan border and I did make a short visit to the neighboring country as well.

I did a couple of safaris in the khoklabari farm and a couple in the jungle, with our birdwatching guide "Rustom", We had great sightings, drongos, wild boar, capped langoor, minivets, warblers and lots of bulbulls, detailed list below. I didn't have a great lens, but did get some good shots of a booted eagle, some kingfisher and a capped langur.

We spotted about 70 different bird species, most of them new to me. It was a wonderful experience.

No Smoking Review

Talking pictures are a very powerful medium. It is very rare that someone gets it just right and is able to communicate exactly what he wants to, and to communicate it effectively and entertain at the same time takes a special genius. It is extremely difficult. But, every once in a while someone is able to accomplish just that and shows the rest of us how it should be done. Anurag Kashyap has done exactly that with "No Smoking."

"No Smoking" explores the real with the fantastic, the bourgeois with the bizarre and manages to make everything so sublime that the viewer must realize where reality ends and fantasy begins. The dreaming is an important part of our lives and "No Smoking" explains the fantastic, the dreaming with wonderful symbolic elements and metaphors, which the viewer must understand.

"No smoking" is not about smoking, it about individuality and K, a person who holds it dear to him. His smoking is his way of rebel. His smoking is a symbol for his arrogance. When he surrenders to his wife's demands of quitting, he surrenders to the world, all along the film he falls and he loses his spin and becomes what everyone wants him to be. A mindless unthinking everyone.

Baba Bengali is the paladin of the spineless world we live in. When K decides to quit he has already fallen into the trap of the Baba/World, it changes him. Finally, his soul is trapped, he has quit smoking and he does not recognize the new himself. he looks at his own body in despair.

Throughout the film Anurag critiques the new India, call centers, therapy clinics, homophobia, the mindless friends and family always trying to change you. I mean he presents the item number at the end of the last scene, it's like he's pissing on the face of everyone who's making mindless crap and selling it to the popcorn munching idiots who watch it.

Not to mention that the photography is spot on, the film is a visual treat to watch, the dreamy sequences are so well done that I was having goosebumps while watching. He gets it spot on in the childhood bathroom smoking sequence, with the sepia and super 8 format. He gets the soul trapped scene just right with the cross-porcessing, The film is a crash-course in how to use cine film to the fullest. The editing is spot on, the mass smoking sequence cut to the mouse in a hole is brilliant. The comic strip talk, is not "experimental", it makes the film. It is "needed."

Lastly, to all those who are trashing the movie, Do I write a review about "Kabhi Saas Bhi Bahu Thi?", at least have the honesty and decency to not trash something you lack the education to understand. Go watch some David Lynch, David Fincher and Martin Scorsese. Go read some books outside your course curricula.

This movie is everything that Indian cinema needs, I just hope Anurag has not exhausted himself, I am hungry for more.

B&W

I've been shooting a lot of B&W since I got back from Singapore, I also managed to sneak in chemicals from there to develop my own Black and white, and have a decent setup at home. Some of the stuff turned out to be not too bad.

The key is the right timing and The Massive Dev Chart has details about almost all B/W film development times and related processing data. Very helpful.

After two full months I took hold of my DSLR. I've been shooting Film for a bit now. Holding a Digital feels great. There was a burst of energy And I Quickly Shot about 30 pictures in a period of 5 minutes on my walk home ... what happened after that is a bitch.

I shot only film while being at Singapore. I developed the film myself and it's pretty decent. look here for the shots from a Delta 400 that I shot at 1600 and pushed while developing it.

While I was taking shots of the shadow play the security guard stopped me from doing it because photography on campus is not allowed for "security reasons". And I spent one hour of my life talking to him, his superior, superior of his superior, and superior of the superior of his superior, who asked me to delete the picture in which a fire hose was visible. I mean come on. People in Bangalore piss me off no end because of their stupid rules.

Anyway, I got some nice shots and a spoiled mood. Btw, Singapore was nice ... shot like 5 rolls, most of it slide Will upload shortly. Ate 3 kgs of bacon and bought a film development tank and chemicals. whoo! hoo!

Maybe I won't sell my DSLR after all it's my baby. And I'll alternate between Digital and film for my travels. one with a DSLR and the next with Film cam.

Prem: Got gourmet bacon at home. come and get. :P

Why do we need another to think? Need another lover to understand love? Why do we need to believe? or care? be accepted? to challenge? and be challenged? We need to reason. To reason is to surface from unconsciousness. Why are we unable to use our own understanding without instructions from others? What stops us from looking for a world where existence would be justified?

It is not a lack of understanding, but lack of persistence to use our own understanding without acceptance from others. The lack of interest to use our own understanding and resolve to not deter from it.

Today when someone asks a question, they do so in order to collect opinion on a subject about which everyone has an opinion already or is supposed to have an opinion; there is not much likelihood of learning anything new. The burning topic is not "What it means to be alive?" but, "Should Sanjay dutt be in jail?" Ask a question that does not yet have an answer. Or is even considered a question by many, and, wait to be categorized. Dismissed if you will by a preformed framework.

Why do we all seek a majordomo? It is so immature. If only I had a book that made me understand, a priest to show me the path, someone to determine my life, I won't need to think, if only I can pay: others will readily undertake this work for me. Figure it out and I can follow.

Throughout our lives, the media bombards us with stories of "thinkers", they then show us the dangerous path that these people led, should we attempt to walk the same. But, an example of this kind is usually meant to frighten, to deter all further attempts. Tell me that is not what Romeo and Juliet is about.

It has become difficult to rid ourselves of this laziness, this conformity and non-thinking that is but become our nature. Rules, Law, Rationality that is used, or rather misused against us. Whoever is capable of breaking away from its chains would only make but a little progress, as he who does so, is not used to this new found freedom. Still looking for the "like minded", still searching for the guardian, the majordomo. Very few have succeeded and fewer will succeed to not follow those who have succeeded, because the followers shall form a great new unthinking mass.

Here lies the great paradox.
